Default Iodine and Health


Mainly from the food intake of iodine to the digestive tract to absorb mainly normal body iodine 25 ~ 26mg, half concentrated in the thyroid, the rest distributed in the plasma, muscle, skin, central nervous system, endocrine tissues.
Iodine-rich food is seafood, such as kelp, seaweed, clams and so on. Sea salt also contains a certain amount of iodine. The estimation of adult takes about 50 ~ 300μg / d, children, 1μg / (kg · d).
Iodine is necessary for the synthesis of thyroid hormone material. Iodine through the thyroid hormone promote protein synthesis, activation of more than 100 kinds of enzymes, regulating energy metabolism. Thyroid hormone can accelerate the oxidation of various substances to increase the body oxygen consumption and produce heat. From a variety of thyroid hormone can affect glucose metabolism, small doses of hormones to increase glycogen synthesis, high-dose hormone is to promote glycogenolysis. Thyroid hormones promote fat synthesis and degradation in order to degrade more apparent. Iodine deficiency can cause two types of human diseases.
(1) endemic goiter disease commonly known as "gall guagua" or "big neck disease" (as shown in Figure 8-13). The clinical manifestations of goiter, the patient gradually thicker neck, when the enlarged thyroid tissue surrounding the organ of oppression, resulting in difficulty in breathing, swallowing difficulties. In China since the 50's began the implementation of iodized salt in the ward to prevent the disease. 40 years of practice has shown that those who adhere to the ward of iodized salt to prevent the disease largely under control.
(2) The disease is also known as endemic cretinism cretinism is endemic goiter disease ward residents and future generations the emergence of a congenital disease. The clinical manifestations of mental retardation, deaf-mute, growth retardation, body short, neurological movement disorders and thyroid dysfunction. Iodine deficiency is a major cause of disease, can add iodine to prevent and treat cretinism.

but But consuming too much salt causes high blood pressure.
I agree iodine is great for health.

My wife has some problems with eating too much sodium, so we swtiched to sea salt which actually has less sodium than table salt because it has more trace minerals in it.
